Did you know that the sense of smell is the most evocative when it comes to memory recall? That's why the smell of hot cider in the fall or lilacs in spring can bring you instantly back to a fond memory. Since smell is so important, when you're designing and decorating your home, it's important to think about scents that can make it feel even homier. Below are a few ways to build the sense of smell into your home.
Candles – Purchase some good smelling candles. They are great for living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms, but don't use scented candles in your kitchen or dining room. Strong fragrances can interfere with food enjoyment!
Bake Something — There's nothing better than the scent of homemade cookies or fresh-baked apple pie to make your home feel instantly cozier. If you have guests coming, put a dozen cookies in the oven to bake, and let the enticing smell fill your interior.
Room Scents — Forget the Febreze, and go for a "green" home fragrance, instead. You can lovely sprays at many home stores, such as Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. Natural fragrances fill your home with natural scents like lemon verbena, lavender, and rose.
Hot Cider — In the colder months, put a pot of cider on the stove, or make some mulled wine in your slow cooker. The spicy smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices will have you ready to curl up by the fire with a good book in no time.
Fresh Flowers – In the warmer months, bring the outdoors inside with bouquets of fresh flowers! They not only add fresh fragrances to your space, but they are a great way to add a pop of color!
